Kat De Luca loves her family and working in their bakery. But she longs for something more, something different. Sebastian Walker, local Cardiologist, grew up in the ultimate dysfunctional family. He can't imagine why Kat would change anything about her life. Can she make him understand? Can he accept what she wants? Will their sizzling attraction be enough to overcome their differences?
She walked towards the door, shaking her head. She glanced at the wall clock. Another thirty minutes before opening. “Sorry, we’re still closed.” More than three feet and a glass door separated them, and yet the blood bounded in her veins. Who was this guy?
The man in question smiled, and dimples bracketed his mouth. His delicious looking mouth. Her ovaries danced. She hadn’t even heard his voice yet.
“What if I beg?” His bright blue eyes held her gaze. She noticed faint lines at the edges. He wasn’t a puppy. And he smiled with his eyes. More points in his favor.
Her ovaries unclenched, stood up straight, singing The Halleluiah Chorus. Before she realized it, Kat unlocked the door. Humid air assaulted her lungs, making breathing difficult. The calendar might say September, but it was still summer in North Carolina.
“Can’t have a grown man begging.” She stood back, holding the door and allowing the stranger to enter. He passed within inches of her, his clean, male scent sending her brain into a tailspin.
“No, we can’t, can we?” He grinned at her, and she felt it through to her toes.
“What can I get you?” How about me, naked in your bed? Was that her talking in a bedroom voice? It had been so long, she almost couldn’t remember.
She tripped over her own feet. He saved her from face planting with strong hands at her waist. “First day with the new feet?”
Kat straightened and grinned at him. She loved a man with a quick wit. She walked around the counter to give herself some breathing room. “No, I blame you. Clearly can’t think, or walk, around all of that handsomeness.” She stopped talking to look him up and down. Thoroughly. “Now, what’s the baked goods emergency?”
“I have an early staff meeting, and I promised something yummy. Of course, I remembered while getting in my car this morning.” He broke off and gave her what could best be described as a puppy face. “Please save me from them.”
She couldn’t help it. She burst out laughing. “Well, since you’re already in the bakery, and I’m a nice person.” She spread her arms wide. “Anything here will win over their good graces.”
He tilted his head, a lock of blonde hair falling over his forehead. She fisted her hands in her apron to avoid brushing it back. The thick locks begged for her hands to run through it. “Confident. I like that in a woman.”
